E07HBSA - Singlespeed 29er

Singlespeed 29er

This bike is an evolution of my first singlespeed 29er that I built in June 2017. When I made that frame, it was intended to be a prototype to be used to determine what I want from a 29er, and what works for me. It has been a very successful prototype and I ended up riding it for a lot longer than initially planned. It's been my favourite bike since its completion, and I've ridden it a lot - casual rides, XC racing in various forms, and I've even done a couple of bikepacking adventures on it. Suffice it to say, with all that time I've spent riding it; I was bound to come up with a few things that could be tweaked.

So, when it was time for me to plan what to build for the Handmade Bicycle Show Australia (HBSA) I knew right away that I wanted to evolve the 29er into my take on the ultimate, modern, singlespeed XC race bike.

Instead of a tapered headtube from Columbus as used for the previous 29er, I opted for a 44mm headtube from Paragon Machineworks, from where I also sourced the stainless steel sliding dropouts, a t47 bottom bracket (instead of a smaller diameter BSA BB), plus other small bits and pieces such as the bottle bosses, thru-axle and cable guides.

As for tube set, I stuck with mainly Columbus Zona, but went for skinnier, 16mm, seat stays and replaced the Zona top tube with a lighter, tapered, Life top tube. I kept the overall design of the frame similar, maintaining the same silhouette, but made a few subtle tweaks to head tube and seat tube angle as well as chain stay length based on the experience gained from riding the original version of the frame.

Once brazed and cleaned up, the frame, along with the carbon fork I sourced from Orbea, got a premium paint job from Bikes by Steve. I went with an automotive colour used by BMW called "Marrakesh Brown". It also got some details in blue - colour matched to the blue anodised parts I had lined up for the final assembly - to tie the whole package together.
